The Single Science Award provides an option for students who do not want to continue to study science beyond GCSE. It has less content than the Combined Science (Double Award) or the Triple (separate) Science, and assessed to an equivalent standard. 

Nowadays students may take several Science GCSEs, the most general of these examinations is known as Single Science and it has the smallest volume of content. It used to be called Core Science. Single Science covers the basics of Biology, Physics and Chemistry and provides students with the key, or core, scientific ideas and theories.

A very tiny minority of students take the Single Science, whilst the vast majority take either the Combined Science (also called Trilogy) or the Triple Science.

The Single Science GCSE consist of all the three aspects: Biology; Chemistry and Physics. The course can be taken at foundation level, which will result in a grade 1 - 5 or a higher tier, which is marked 5 - 9. Schools often place students that struggle with a module into a foundation tier, although here at Excel in Key Subjects, we believe this could be a missed opportunity. If a student is struggling with a particular area, it is often simply a case of employing the use of some extra tuition to get them succeeding in the higher tier.

The Single Science as offered by the AQA Exam board is called the GCSE Combined Science: Synergy. This must not be confused with the AQA GCSE Combined Science: Trilogy (the Double Award), which contains more content and is a separate course.

The Single Science as offered by the Exam board WJEC is called the WJEC GCSE Integrated Science . It's specification (syllabus) is the WJEC GCSE Integrated Science Specification.
